Bring & Buy Auction In-Store Event

SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 30, 2024 | Registration 10:30am - 11:30am, Auction itself runs 12:00pm - 6:00pm

What is a Bring-And-Buy Auction?

A Bring-And-Buy Auction (or a Bring-And-Buy Sale) is a sale where people bring things to be sold and in turn can buy things brought by other people. Rather than having an auctioneer oversee individual lots, sellers are able to put their items on display in a dedicated space. Attendees can look at all of the auction items in one location and if they find an item they would like to buy, simply pick it up and bring it to the cashier to pay the appropriate listed price.

Prices are set in two hour increments for the sale, and it is generally recommended that you set the price lower the closer to the end of the auction it is.

The auction is entirely cash based, and the location hosting it takes a percentage cut of sales.

How does it work?

  1. Download and complete the Bring-And-Buy Seller Registration form in Excel format here, OR PDF format here providing Scalliwag Toys with your contact information, list of items for sale, and other pertinent information. This form must be submitted in person or by email (info@scalliwagtoys.ca) no later than Friday November 29, 2024 at 7:00pm.

  2. Fill out one item sheet per item being sold.  Item sheets can be downloaded in Excel format here, PDF format here, or picked up in advance at the store - there are four to a page. Please bring your item sheets printed and ready to attach to your items during registration Saturday morning. If you are unable to print them yourself, you are welcome to email completed item sheets to the same email address above - printing fees may apply. The Item sheet provides all the details necessary for the buyer to make a decision without needing to open the product and rummage through it. Seller Numbers will be provided at check-in.

  3. Register at the store from 10:30am-11:30am on Saturday November 30, 2024. Staff will confirm your items are properly marked with Item Sheets and will provide you a Seller Number. Then place your items in a free space on one of tables. Sellers are not required to stay for the duration of the event, but are welcome to check back in throughout the day.

  4. Return to Scalliwag Toys at 6:30pm to pick up your unsold items as well as any proceeds made from the auction (minus the store's auction fee of $1 or 10% of total, whichever is higher).

  5. We will not accept any items for the auction that were not submitted through the above process. Registration forms submitted after 7:00pm on Friday November 29, 2024 will not be considered for auction unless you have spoken to store staff and been given permission to be late due to extenuating circumstances.

How to set a price

It is ultimately the seller's decision on what their items should sell for.  We recommend a diminishing amount based on the time of purchase in the auction. The auction runs for six hours - from noon to 6pm - and each item will have its price change (at your discretion) at 2pm and 4pm. While you do not need to change the sales amount per 2 hour window, it is encouraged as an item just sitting there suggests that the price is not market friendly and you might have to just carry it home again.

Prices should be in whole dollar amounts ($5.00 not $4.99 or $4.50) to facilitate ease of processing for the auction team.

Loose Item auctions

This issue will arise in relation to the wargame auctions for the Bring-And-Buy event. As the seller, you are responsible for packing and preparing your lots. For maximum visibility, consider the use of ziplock bags or clear containers and you should consider factoring those into your pricing if you don’t want to give away bins.

Seller Proceeds

Seller proceeds will be available at the end of the Bring-And-Buy Auction at 7:00pm. Sellers can arrange pick up times on Sunday November 30, 2024 if they cannot return to store at the end of the auction. We will not be distributing proceeds before 7:00pm.

An auction fee will be applied to all lots that sell and will amount to $1.00 or 10% of the lot total, whichever is higher.

Sellers can choose to leave any unsold items with Scalliwag Toys for donation to select local charities. We are also happy to donate the proceeds of your auction to a local charity.

This format is modelled on Bring And Buy Auctions from organizations like Breakout Con in Toronto and KingCon in Annapolis Valley; if you have any questions or need clarification, please reach out! We want everyone to have a great time clearing some space for new gaming experiences, and hopefully finding some treasures to take home or donate to a worthy local charity for others to love and enjoy.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Will I be able to sell games or other items privately at my table instead of using the Bring & Buy format?

A: No. If you want to sell things independently, do so using the many options available outside of Scalliwag Toys.

Q: What items can be sold at this event?

A: Any board game, RPG, Wargame or related items. Related items can include miniatures, terrain pieces, codices, rulebooks and sourcebooks. We do not accept the following for auction: dice, TCG/CCG singles, video games, or promotional materials. It is at the discretion of Scalliwag Toys to permit an item to be sold at the Bring-And-Buy Auction, so if there is any uncertainty, the final say rests with staff.

Q: What is the final time to enter items for the auction?

A: Registration of auction items must be submitted to Scalliwag Toys no later than 7:00pm on Friday November 29, 2024.

Q: When do we need to be at the auction to set up our lot?

A: On site registration occurs from 10:30am-11:30am on Saturday November 30, 2024. Sellers are not required to stay in the store for the duration of the auction, but should plan to return for the end of the day.

Q: Can I pay for auction items with debit or credit?

A: No, this is a cash only event. There are four banks and several ATMs in Downtown Belleville though, and we are letting everyone know about the event well in advance to allow for careful planning.
